Pain Management Part II; Alternatives to Opioids - EPIX CME

There are many alternative therapies to opioids for a wide variety of painful conditions we may see as emergency and urgent care providers. It’s important to recognize that we can achieve excellent pain relief for our patients while minimizing and often eliminating the use of opioids in their treatment. Let’s change our standard response to pain and balance the need to control pain with dangers of addiction and complications.

EPIX’s second course in the opioid CME series, Pain Management Part II; Alternatives to Opioids, covers the many other alternatives to opioids for pain and best alternatives for specific pain scenarios. Also available to all EPIX insured providers is Pain Management Part I, Opioids in the ED.

EPIX CME courses are offered at no charge to insured providers and for a fee to other providers. Click here to view a list of all EPIX CME (approved for ACEP Category I credit). Contact for further information.

"Can't Miss" Seizure Presentations, Part 2

By Dr. Stephen Colucciello

The Wild Man

A 40-year-old plaintiff’s attorney from the firm of Shady and Leach presents with a first time seizure.

Medics gave him several rounds of midazolam for agitation during transport and the patient arrives with the following vital signs: BP 185/110, P 135, T 101, R 25, PO 98% and blood glucose 145.

The patient is tremulous and will not follow commands. He is drenched in sweat, intermittently retches and scratches frantically.

Although there are no focal neuro deficits, the patient is hyper-reflexic and looks wildly around the room during the exam. During the physical, he tries to eat your reflex hammer.
